Pheromones, kairomones and the aggregation dynamics of the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis

Article Abstract:

A novel method of fly self-marking was utilized to characterize the dynamics of lek-like aggregations in natural populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis sandflies. Analysis of the host- and fly-mediated determinants of male and female sandfly immigration and migration indicated the faster emigration rate of the females compared to males. The emigration rate of males was also inversely related to host and fly abundance. Furthermore, aggregation patterns were dependent on mating success in males and food abundance in females.

Hatchling sea turtles use surface waves to establish a magnetic compass direction

Article Abstract:

The orientation behavior of loggerhead hatchling sea turtles that had been exposed to waves for either 15 or 30 minutes was explored to determine whether the turtles use surface waves to establish a magnetic compass direction. Results revealed that hatchlings can transfer a heading induced by waves to a magnetic compass. These turtles relied on multiple cues and the ability to transfer information between various cues for their migratory orientation.
