Political feud blocks funds

Article Abstract:

Italy's Space Agency (ASI) and its science advisory committee have been unable to resolve a conflict over the proper allocation of ASI's budget. The committee objects to ASI's plan to cut spending on space science research by more than half despite a law mandating that 15% of ASI's budget be devoted to research. The committee opposed the spending plan on the grounds that its responsibilities would diminish. The dispute, while indicating uncertainties in the agencies' relations, may also hurt Italy's scientific prestige.

Europe's space funds feel the squeeze..

Article Abstract:

European space scientists are calling on member states of the European Space Agency (ESA) to remove the funding cap on the agency's science programme. The cap has eroded the programme and placed it in serous financial crisis according to ESA space science director Roger Bonnet. Some projects in the long term Horizons 2000 science plan may have to be abandoned, and the funding constraints have strained relationships between astrophysicists and Solar System scientists.

'Quick' Mars mission proposal puts pressure on ESA's plans

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's (ESA) proposal to launch a fast and cheap Mars mission have split Europe's space scientists over how the agency's scientific priorities should be determined. The ESA's Space Programme Committee has already agreed to continue a feasibility study of another Mars mission, designed to analyse the planet's surface. It is feared that the two projects will vie for limited funding.
