Article Abstract:

A new method of synthesizing dendritic polymers or dendrimers has been developed. Dendrimers are a new form of synthetic polymer that are derived from several linear chains growing from a central molecule. C.J. Hawker and J.M.J. Frechet utilized a convergent technique for producing dendrimers. The atypical structure of the dendrimers that the new method will generate may lead to new materials.

For 300 years, quinine has been used as a natural treatment for malaria, and for 150 years, researchers have sought a way to synthesize the alkaloid, with no success. The development of modern techniques and tools, however, has enabled organic chemists to synthesize almost any large, complex natural product, including quinine.

Colloidal nanocrystal synthesis and the organic-inorganic interface

Article Abstract:

A set of concepts for controlling the growth of colloidal inorganic nanocrystals in a hot organic surfactant is outlined. The concepts underpinning kinetic control, which allows narrow nanocrystal-size distributions and some control over particle shape, are introduced.
