Population aggregation analysis of three caviar-producing species of sturgeons and implications for the species identificaiton of black caviar

Article Abstract:

Nucleotide analysis can help identify sturgeon population aggregation. Comparison of diagnostic nucleotide positions in living sturgeon species with commercial caviar samples showed over 23% of labeling was incorrect. This could be the result of increased demand for caviar and declines in three caviar-producing species. Endangered and threatened species are being replaced with commercial species, and this suggests illegal poaching and harvesting of sturgeon eggs.

PCR identification of black caviar

Article Abstract:

A polymerase chain reaction provides an accurate and inexpensive method for species diagnosis of caviar. The method uses only one egg in the diagnosis and may help in international conservation and legal efforts. Unregulated overfishing, absence of a spawning ground and pollution are causing great damage to the caviar producing species known as sturgeons and paddlefishes. The results of a survey of 25 commercially available types of caviar are given.

Still searching for an alternative view of coral reef fish consumption: a response

Article Abstract:

The author argues the merits of his study of coral reef fish consumption in the US Virgin Islands in response to criticisms of his methodology. Points addressed include the stated simplicity of the study, as well as the need to reveal the impact of local over-fishing on reef resources.
