Population density affects sex ratio variation in red deer

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken among the red deer population on the Isle of Rum, Scotland, indicates that there is more than one mechanism influencing birth sex ratios in a single mammal population. These mechanisms appears to be dependent on environmental conditions. These factors could be the reason for the inconsistency in sex-ratio deviations across mammalian populations. Favourable environmental conditions may be required for adaptive differences in the conception sex ratio linked to individual phenotypic variation.

Dominant rams lose out by sperm depletion

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the evidence of sperm depletion which comes from research into Soay sheep. The influence of the promiscuity of the sheep on the sperm production of the dominant rams is discussed.

Climate change and constraints on breeding

Article Abstract:

Birds and the effect of climate change on their breeding ability are discussed. The great tit was studied and the resulting energy trade-off between breeding and maintenance is presented.
