Population dynamics of Zenaida doves in Cidra, Puerto Rico

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken in the municipality of Cidra, Puerto Rico, into the population dynamics of Zenaida doves has established that predation is not necessarily the only or most significant density-dependent factor influencing the size of the nesting population. The spatial distribution of nests was regular at high nest densities and marginally aggregated at low nest densities. The breeding productivity of Zenaida doves is high because of multiple brooding and lengthy nesting periods. These doves can compensate for periods of high mortality through high recruitment rates.

Population dynamics of Zenaida doves in Cidra, Puerto Rico

Article Abstract:

Basic demographic parameters of Zenaida doves at farmlands and second-growth forests in eastcentral Puerto Rico in 1990-92 were estimated to improve understanding of the population dynamics of the species. Results revealed an increase in density and population size estimates of Zenaida doves after June, which is the peak of the nesting season. A positive correlation was also noted between density or line transect data and population size estimates or capture-recapture data.
