Population groups can hold critical clues

Article Abstract:

Genetically isolated populations with high incidence of a particular medical disorder are the key to understanding genetic defects underlying single-gene and complex diseases. Susceptibility genes can be easily identified as these populations have high inbreeding, low background polymorphism, and a small number of founding members. The Finnish population is a prime example of a genetically isolated population, and many disease-causing genetic defects have been identified among them. Countries such as India and China may offer more genetically isolated populations.

Observation of short-range critical wetting

Article Abstract:

Experimental observations of the short-range wetting transition near to the critical point in methanol-alkane binary liquid mixtures, revealed second-order, critical wetting for nonane. The measured value complies with predictions of mean-field theory, but strongly disagrees with renormalization-group calculations, predicting non-universal behavior.

German bioethics inquiry 'could hold up essential rule changes'

Article Abstract:

The Social Democrats (SPD) in the German parliament have opposed an all-parliamentary commission of inquiry on human rights and bioethics, arguing that such a commission could delay the introduction of legislation in the area of biomedicine. The party has attempt to prevent similar grey areas occurring in other areas of biomedicine.
