Portugal's science plots its future

Article Abstract:

Nationwide consultation is to take place in Portugal about potential approaches to science and technology in the period to 2006. The Ministry of Science and Technology will use the results of this consultation to undertake an Integrated Programme of Science and Technology, draw up the next European Commission programme of support for science and technology and monitor the implementation of the 1988 Law of Scientific and Technological Development. The government has already approved the new Scientific and Technological Development Programme for 2000 to 2006.

Spanish university sued for advertising posts in August

Article Abstract:

The University of La Laguna (ULL) in the Canary Islands is being sued by The Spanish Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (AACTE) for advertising 80 professorial posts in August when many Spanish citizens are on holiday. The Association argues that the university has acted deliberately to favor the appointment of local candidates. However the university claims to be making use of administrative resources that would otherwise be underused.

Drug price deal spells windfall for researchers

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the agreement which has been reached between the Spanish government and the pharmaceutical industry. The industry will increase biomedical research funding and the government will not tighten drug price controls.
