Possible blindsight in infants lacking one cerebral hemisphere

Article Abstract:

Two infants who had undergone hemispherectomy or the removal of a cerebral hemisphere were tested for the effect on vision. Both infants showed evidence of blindsight or the ability to locate objects within the visual field despite being subjectively blind after injury to the striate cortex. Moreover, in both infants the subcortical cortex maintained control over the ability to focus on objects but not over binocular optokinetic nystagmus, indicating the complex interrelation of the cortical and subcortical visual systems among hemispherectomized children.

Only one speed per object

Article Abstract:

Visual psychophysics involves the quantitative analysis of the sensitivity and precision of human judgements to determine the organizational intricacies of the visual system. Structuring of the visual field into two neighboring regions is a key process in perceptual organization. The determination of a simple psychophysical judgement of pattern speed is attributed to the grouping process.
