Potential weaknesses in unaccustomed generosity: The large boost of funds for British science is an essential means to arrest its decline

Article Abstract:

The British government has announced extra funds to support research in universities and research councils. The Wellcome Trust is placed in a central role, contributing 400 million pounds sterling to the 1.4 billion of extra funding, and there is heavy emphasis on the life sciences. There is a danger however, that there will be a continuing decline in the physical sciences, because of the de factor power given to the Director General of Research Councils over the way the money is distributed.

Budget blues for US science: President Bill Clinton's budget request for research falls short of the expectations of the scientific community, which have recently risen to unrealistic levels

Article Abstract:

Total research and development investment by the federal US government by fall during fiscal year 2000 if current proposals are approved by Congress. The fall is due to reduced spending on development and testing of military equipment, although modest increases are proposed for civilian research, including an 8% rise for the National Science Foundation (NSF). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is likely to receive just a 2% increase.
