Synaptic tagging and long-term potentiation

Article Abstract:

Sensory experiences leave their mark on the brain by altering the effectiveness of synapses between neurons which lead to hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP). Analysis of hippocampal LTP based on a synaptic model for memory indicated the role of repeated tetanic stimulation in triggering a wave of protein synthesis that led to the consolidation of LTP in a secondary synapse. Furthermore, protein synthesis-mediated consolidation of LTP was induced by the application of repeated tetanic stimulation in the primary synapse.

Reversal of long-term potentiation by inhibitors of haem oxygenase

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to test the long-term potentiation (LTP) of the mechanism that forms the basis for certain kinds of learning and memorizing. An investigation was conducted to show the participation of carbon monoxide as a retrograde signal in LTP by studying the effect of inhibitors of the enzyme haem oxygenase-2 on LTP. Results showed that these inhibitors prevent the induction of LTP and have no effect on long-term depression, but have a reverting effect on LTP.
