Privacy bill under threat from researchers

Article Abstract:

The US Congress is proposing to write a law protecting the privacy of medical patients and introduce criminal sanctions against people who disclose information which they should not. Pharmaceutical, biotechnology and healthcare companies would have to get patients' consent to conduct research. They would also have to get permission to do the research from ethics committees. Researchers who use identifiable medical records or medical specimens are opposing the legislation because it would cause problems if they had to get consent from the people who gave the specimens.

It is vital that the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) in the US makes the completion of genome sequencing work under the Human Genome Project its main priority, according to researchers working on genome sequencing. The NHGRI is the main source of funding for the Human Genome Project. Researchers are concerned that NHGRI is becoming diverted by other projects, and feel that it could devote more funding to the Human Genome Project.
