Promega, Roche clash over use of Taq in labs

Article Abstract:

Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. Roche Molecular Systems has named over 150 scientists from research institutes across the US for infringement of its patent on the thermostable enzyme Taq polymerase in a suit filed at the District Court in San Francisco, CA, in May 1995. Roche, which bought the rights to Taq polymerase from Cetus for $300 million in 1992, has an ongoing legal battle with Promega Corp. over the rights to the enzyme. The scientists named in the suit acknowledged in published research papers that they had used Promega's Taq polymerase for polymerase chain reactions.

UK gets rough ride over call for space cuts

Article Abstract:

An independent review suggests that the cost of the satellite mission organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) can be decreased by 10% to 15%, if different methods are used by the agency and scientific community. The expenditure can be reduced by analyzing the early stages of mission planning and by a 20% reduction in permanent staff. ESA member states are encountering individual budget pressures but are conscious about the fulfillment of the satellite program. A political compromise can solve the problem.

Clash over too demanding Euro-water standards

Article Abstract:

England and Wales's Office of Water Services warns of price rises for water due to excessive European standards. Europe's water industry has repeatedly demanded changes in current standards, set in 1975. Nitrate and pesticide levels are singled out as being too stringent and unscientific. With the European Commission about to negotiate a revision in the laws, the water industry seeks primarily to mitigate any new requirements.
