Protection and privilege

Article Abstract:

Specialized cells called T regulatory cells ([T.sub.reg]) present in the immune system regulate the system so as to exempt transplanted tissues from an immune response. Studies reveal that mast cells, known for their role in allergic responses, interact with the Tcells to effect protection to the transplanted tissue from microbe attacks, wherein the growth and functionality of mast cells are specifically enhanced by the secretion of IL-9 polypeptide molecule by the T cells.

Mutations of Jak-3 gene in patients with autosomal severe combined immune deficiency (SCID)

Article Abstract:

A mutation in the Jak-3 or STAT proteins can cause severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) in human beings. SCID is a group of hereditary diseases and mutations in the gamma-chain which is involved in X-linked SCID, which cause decrease in circulating T cells and excess of B lymphocytes. There is also a reduction in the number of circulating natural killer cells in patients in which there are abnormal Jak-3 genes.

What does it mean to be just 17?

Article Abstract:

[T.sub.H]17 cells were proposed as a new T-cell lineage that is characterized by the selective secretion of cytokine. It was observed that a mixture of inflammatory cytokines that includes interleukin-6 (IL-6) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta 1 were found to be strong cocktail, resulting in the production of [T.sub.H]17 cells.
