Protostellar jets irradiated by massive stars

Article Abstract:

Solar-type stars form gradually, during which time they externally add mass from the surrounding dense disks and cloud cores. This addition requires angular momentum to be released, an important mechanism for which is the production of jets along the polar axes. However, the presence of large, luminous stars within the same star-forming region can strip away the cicrumstellar envelopes of young stars with ultraviolet radiation, thus exposing the disks to photoerosion. An observation of four collimated jets from young stars with no cicrumstellar cloud cores shows that the production of jets appears to be largely unaffected by ultraviolet radiation.

Resolution of the circumstellar gas around the Be star Psi Persei

Article Abstract:

The gas cloud surrounding the Be star Psi Persei has been clarified at 15 gigahertz and been found to produce radio waves from non-spherical, heat-radiating areas. Like Be stars in general, Psi Persei is a fast-revolving, non-supergiant Be star producing both a hydrogen-line emission and a large amount of continuum emission from near-infrared radio wavelengths. The new observations support the theory that circumstellar plasma distributions in equatorial regions generate the emissions characteristic of Be stars.
