Public education efforts on the ESA reauthorization

Article Abstract:

The reauthorization of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) is gaining tremendous support from legislators and conservationists. The American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA) is playing a significant role in lobbying efforts and soliciting public support for the ESA's reauthorization. Aside from joining the Endangered Species Coalition, the AAZPA also forged a partnership with the National Audobon Society to better educate the public through methods that foster positive attitudes towards wildlife.

Roadblocks to reauthorization: The latest controversies in the ESA debate

Article Abstract:

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) came up for renewal in 1992, but the existing law has remained in effect, because of the failure to reauthorize. A bi-partisan bill The Endangered Species Recovery Act of 1997 is a compromise, but may not be sufficiently carefully crafted. The current Act fails to sufficiently protect species on private land and many imperiled species have been denied listing due to lack of resources in processing petitions.

Ships passing in the night: Current prospects for reauthorization of the Endangered Species Act

Article Abstract:

The two groups with an interest in the reauthorization of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) have radically different purposes for favouring ESA reauthorization. Property rights advocates want to return land use authority to state and local government, while the recovery advocates see the objectives of ESA reform as the better recovery of species by ensuring that land use decisions are guided by recovery efforts.
