Purine derivatives in snow-urine as a dietary index for free-ranging elk

Article Abstract:

Recent developments in the use of noninvasive techniques for assessing the nutritional status of free-ranging herbivores have included research on captive elk in which 116 snow-urine samples were assayed to determine concentrations of creatinine and the purine derivative allantoin. There was found to be a link between excretion of allantoin in urine and intake of digestible dry matter. This prompts the conclusion that indications regarding the nutritional status of wild ruminants may be obtained from urinary purine derivatives.

Reproduction and survival of Yellowstone bison

Article Abstract:

The survival, reproduction and birth rates of bison in Yellowstone National Park to study their overabundance in the park are examined. It is suggested that eradication of brucellosis by vaccination would result in an increase in their population, thus facilitating their movement outside the park.
