Pushing the frontiers of interdisciplinary research: an idea whose time has come

Article Abstract:

There is growing recognition among biologists of the need to encourage collaboration between biologists and computer scientists, chemists, physicists and engineers. Traditional cultural and administrative boundaries are being swept aside, and new centres of excellence are emerging in which a single department or discipline does not dominate and there is strong emphasis on technology development. Examples of the new interdisciplinary approach include the Harvard Center for Genomics Research and the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA.
