Putting it on plastic

Article Abstract:

Philips Research Laboratories, based in the Netherlands, has made an all-plastic functioning integrated circuit on a flexible wafer. While the integrated circuits are slower than silicon electronics, they may have a niche market in high-volume, disposable electronic products, such as 'smart' labelling and electronic watermarks.

Putting technology in its place: why don't Europeans carry Mayan calendar calculators in their Filofaxes?

Article Abstract:

Mayan calendars, based on base-20 mathematics, a celestial cycle of 18,980 days and a four-day dating system, were more accurate than European calendars when they were devised. But Mayan technology never transferred to Europe, because, like some other technological inventions, it remained unrecognised.
