Response of elk to changes in plant production and nutrition following prescribed burning

Article Abstract:

Responses of elk (Cervus elaphus) to prescribed burning of areas dominated by sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) in south-central Montana, USA, are examined according to changes in plant production and nutritional quality. Elk increased use of burned sites 1-2 years after burning due to increase in quality and quantity of forage, and then lowered use to levels associated with preburn conditions over the next 3-10 years.

Edge effects of gated and ungated roads on terrestrial salamanders

Article Abstract:

The examination of edge effects of forest roads on red-backed salamanders has revealed that wider ungated roads have edge effect of larger magnitude than narrow gated roads. Magnitude of edge effects is not impacted by habitat variables such as temperature, soil moisture and leaf litter thickness.
