Responses to conspecific and heterospecific olfactory cues in the swordtail Xiphophorus cortezi

Article Abstract:

Female swordtail Xiphophorus cortezi seem to gain information about species identity from the olfactory stimulus provided by conspecific and closely related heterospecific males. This information is useful in the early stages of mate recognition. However, it appears that the olfactory stimulus is not involved in mate preference. It is clear that both the chemical cue and the ability of the female to detect and preferentially respond to it are developing extremely quickly in northern swordtails.

Male mate based upon female nuptial coloration in the brook stickleback, Culaea inconstans (Kirtland)

Article Abstract:

Male brook sticklebacks distinguish between females based upon the presence or absence of female nuptial coloration when seeking spawning partners. A study of sticklebacks from three different populations found that the males in all three groups would turn their reproductive attention first towards the most brightly colored female available. The research also suggests that males with higher parental investment become more selective in their choice of partners.

Changes in response to olfactory cues across the ovulatory cycle in brook sticklebacks, Culaea inconstans

Article Abstract:

The female brook stickleback's response to the male-based cue changes depending upon the stage she has reached in their ovulatory cycle is described. A female teleost shows a change in responsiveness to male-based odors across her ovulatory cycle similar to that displayed by female mammals.
