Restoring river flow

Article Abstract:

The 29 locks and 28 dams built between the Minneapolis and Cairo, Illinois, turned 854 miles of the river into a series of extended pools deep enough for barges to navigate but often too deep to sustain the river plants that anchored the ecosystem across thousands of acres of flood plain. An innovative strategy, involving temporarily drawing down the river to expose and dry mud flats on the flood plain, is backed by the conservancy and many other groups, and can go a long way toward restoring the flood plain ecosystem without harming barge navigation.

Bison and biodiversity: Prairie life thrives where the big grazers dine

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted at the Kansas Prairie Preserve in Kansas, co-owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University showing that grazing is essential to retain the full complement of critters on the nation's grasslands that are dwindling. It is found that allowing bison or cattle to graze patches down rather than moving the herd around to graze evenly increases the number of plant species and attracts a wider assortment of insects and bird species.

Improving water quality

Article Abstract:

Conservancy recuperated the Mackinaw River watershed, Illinois, in a plan to soften agriculture's impact on the Mississippi river-one farm at a time. The Conservancy began focusing in the early 1990s on the 1,100-square-mile Mackinaw River basin to learn how best to protect those waterways.
