Restructuring plans could revitalize museums' role

Article Abstract:

Improvement in the management of the natural history museums, as recommended by the report of the rationalization survey conducted for the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, would help revitalize the museums and modernize their display and information content. The museums can play a vital role in handling the wide spread scientific illiteracy in society. The report suggests the setting up of two national museums in both Cape Town and Pretoria but the museums in the provinces are unlikely to agree to part with their important collections.

Airport plans threaten dolphin sanctuary

Article Abstract:

Green groups of Hong Kong are opposed to the government's plan to build the Aviation Fuel Receiving Facility (AFRF) at Sha Chau island which falls under the proposed marine sanctuary area for the rare Chinese white dolphins. Joanna Ruxton, senior conservation officer for the World Wide Fund for Nature, Hong Kong, feels that a combination of human activity, the blasting during the construction and the volume of shipping traffic would be detrimental to the survival of the dolphins.

Do flame retardants threaten ocean life?

Article Abstract:

Brominated flame retardants are used in high concentrations in electronic equipment, textiles and cars. Two groups of flame retardants, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were found to be present in sperm whales, suggesting that the compounds have reached deep ocean waters. Particularly high levels of PBDEs were found in seals and dolphins, indicating an environmental problem.
