Ringing the changes at Bell Labs

Article Abstract:

Jeong Kim, president of Bell Labs, has created fresh enthusiasm at Bell, which was once one of the world's greatest research centers but has fallen behind since the 1990s. Kim has reorganized the lab into teams that resemble small start-up companies and compete for funding, has increased dialogue between researchers and business managers by arranging in-house technology summits and has dramatically reduced the number of technology-development projects.

Security restrictions lead foreign students to snub US universities

Article Abstract:

A study done on 126 institutions shows that the number of foreign graduate students admitted to top US research institutions are decreasing and the security procedures are found to be the reason behind this sharp decline. The new immigration rules after the September 11 terrorist attack requires foreign scientists to undergo security checks with various US agencies and student-tracking system has caused lengthy delays for some visitors.

Intelligence law draws fire over NSF security project

Article Abstract:

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is held by the US Congress to coordinate research on intelligence matters and the Intelligence Authorization Act calls NSF to hold workshops for the sake of government security evaluations. But, critics say that, if the research agency acts as instructed, it will violate its tradition of openly disseminated science.
