Same-sex mating and the origin of the Vancouver Island Cryptococcus gattii outbreak

Article Abstract:

Cryptococcus gatti outbreak isolates comprise two distinct genotypes, majority of isolates are hypervirulent and have an identical genotype and the minority of isolates are significantly less virulent and share an identical genotype with fertile isolates. Genotype analysis reveals evidence of sexual reproduction.

Identification of the sex genes in an early diverged fungus

Article Abstract:

The technique of bioinformatic and genetic mapping is employed for the identification of the sex genes in an early diverged fungus, Phycomyces blakesleeanus. Findings reveal that each sex allele contains a single gene that encodes a high-mobility group (HMG)-domain protein.

Sexual reproduction between partners of the same mating type in Cryptococcus neoformans

Article Abstract:

A study on the hallmarks of mating that occur during fruiting, including diploidization and meiosis in Cryptococcus neoformans, is reported. These studies reveal the way in which sexual reproduction occurs between partners of the same mating type.
