Seasonal habitat selection by marten in an untrapped forest preserve

Article Abstract:

Researchers studied the habitat choices of 38 adult marten in a forested area of northcentral Maine. Earlier studies connected marten distribution with coniferous forests, but the marten in this study showed no preference for coniferous or deciduous woodland, during either the summer or the winter months. Also, 90% of the females trapped during spring were lactating, despite having passed the winter in low-coniferous habitats. The researchers concluded from their observations that horizontal and vertical structure may be more important than tree species in marten habitat selection.

Winter use of glyphosate-treated clearcuts by moose in Maine

Article Abstract:

There has been only limited research so far into responses of moose to glyphosate-induced changes in habitat on clearcuts in northern coniferous forests. Recent research has sought to address this issue by considering the use of clearcuts by moose and conifer cover at one-two years and seven-11 years after glyphosate treatment. It was found that reduced browse availability led to less foraging activity at one-two years post-treatment. There was also a rise in foraging activity on sites with greater levels of conifer cover.

Broad-scale predictors of Canada lynx occurrence in eastern North America

Article Abstract:

Lynx occurrence is modeled and mapped in eastern North America using habitat and weather data from 7 eastern states and 3 Canadian provinces. The majority of potential lynx habitat in the eastern United States is on private lands and continuous with potential habitat in Canada.
