Seismic hazard in the Marmara Sea region following the 17 August 1999 Izmit earthquake

Article Abstract:

The earthquake that took place 100 km of Istanbul, Turkey, near the city of Izmit, Turkey, on Aug 17, 1999, substantially modifies the stress distribution resulting from previous fault interactions on the North Anatolian fault. New stress models offer a consistent view of the long term spatio-temporal behaviour of this fault and show that two events of magnitude equivalent to, or greater than, the Aug 1999 earthquake are likely to arise within the next decades under the Marmara Sea. All the active North Anatolian fault segments have now ruptured from eastern Turkey to the Sea of Marmara.

Earthquake risk from co-seismic stress

Article Abstract:

The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake in Indonesia in the year 2004 and its tsunami have increased the possibility of a triggered earthquake on the contiguous Sunda trench subduction zone. Although a subduction-zone event in the Sunda trench is more likely by the Indonesian earthquake, the increase in stress is currently localized on the north of this segment and the effect might spread further south due to viscoelastic relaxation in the lower crust.

Seismology: Earthquake risk on the Sunda trench

Article Abstract:

The stresses induced by the Sumatra-Andaman rupture at the hypocenter of the Simeulue-Nias earthquake, consisting of both the co-seismic elastic effect and the effect of post-seismic viscoelastic relaxation of the upper mantle is calculated. The results revealed that the total stress perturbation at the hypocenter was small, between 0.07 and 0.17 bars.
