Selective copying in mate choices of female sticklebacks

Article Abstract:

A study exploring the sexual preferences of female three-spined sticklebacks on males with nest eggs was conducted. Results indicate that females are more likely to choose males with an average clutch of eggs over those males with no eggs or a with an above average size clutch. A nest with noeggs may signify a male who steals eggs and one with an above average size clutch may pose some danger to newly deposited eggs since they may be eaten by the male.

Mutual mate choice in sticklebacks: attractive males choose big females, which lay big eggs

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the hypothesis that sexual selection in male sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, is driven by the desire for high-quality females, and vice-versa. After mating male and female sticklebacks, the eggs were counted and weighed. Results indicate that male sticklebacks preferred bigger females which tended to lay either more and heavier eggs.

UV wavelengths affect female mate choice in three-spined sticklebacks
