Selenium in aquatic birds from central California

Article Abstract:

Researchers investigated selenium concentration in aquatic birds in the Grassland Water District of California in 1989 and 1994. Selenium concentrations in these birds reached levels believed to hinder reproductive function in the early 1980s. This was due to the use of water drained from agricultural land in wetland management operations. This practice ceased in 1985. The study found that selenium concentration levels were lower in 1994 than those revealed in a 1986 investigation but similar to 1988 levels and, for some birds, still above the threshold associated with reproductive impairment.

Selenium in aquatic birds from central California

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to measure Selenium concentration in aquatic birds after a long-term use of 20 year of predominately freshwater for wetland management in the North and South Grasslands of California, USA. It is recommended that selenium-contaminated water should not be used for management or allowed as an input into arid wetlands throughout the western United States.
