Self-organizing nest construction in ants: individual worker behaviour and the nest's dynamics

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the nest construction behavior of the ant Leptothorax tuberointerruptus. The relationship between the nest structures and individual worker ant behavior was also examined. Results reveal that wall construction and the building of nest entrances are due to small and simple behavioral patterns which the ants observe. The qualitative and quantitative behavioral rules are incorporated into a mathematical model.

An agent-based model of collective nest choice by the ant temnothorax albipennis

Article Abstract:

Colonies of the ant Temnothorax albipennis can collectively choose the best of several nest sites even when many active ants that organize the move visit and this ability stems from the ants strategy of graded commitment to a potential home. The ants proceed from independent assessment to recruiting fellow active ants through slow tandem runs to bringing the passive bulk of the colony through rapid transport.
