Semiconductor non-molecular nitrogen up to 240 GPa and its low-pressure stability

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrating that the non-molecular phase of nitrogen is capable to semiconduct up to 240 GPa. Particular attention is given to the hysteresis exhibited by the process of transition from insulating to semiconducting.

Transformation of stishovite to a denser phase at lower-mantle pressures

Article Abstract:

A study of the proposed structural transformation of stishovite at high pressure, using Raman spectroscopy and a theoretical model, shows that stishovite undergoes transformation even at low pressure. The pressure dependence of the soft B1g mode of this SiO2 polymorph changes at 50 GPa, and the Eg mode splits at this pressure, leading to the transition to CaCl2 structure. These observations account for the presence of free silica in the deep mantle in the CaCl2 structure at low pressures.

Superconductivity at 10-17 K in compressed sulphur

Article Abstract:

Research shows that elemental sulphur turns into a metal with superconductor properties and a transition temperature of 10.1 degrees kelvin at 93 GPa. Magnetic susceptibility tests using megabar-pressure diamond anvil cells have been used to show that the transition temperature increases with pressure. A higher pressure metallic phase near 160 GPa exists when the temperature is increased from 14 to 17 degrees kelvin.
