Sequence variation of the human Y chromosome

Article Abstract:

A sequencing survey of the Y chromosomes of five humans and a chimpanzee resulted in more than 100 kilobases of sequence from the non-recombining part of the chromosomes. The Y chromosome region under study was adjacent to the Yp pseudoautosomal limit. Results show that out of 18.3 kilobases taken from each human, only three sites showed the existence of substitution. On the other hand, human and chimpanzee sequences demonstrated a 1.3% convergence.

The nuclear hormone receptor SEX-1 is an X-chromosome signal that determines nematode sex

Article Abstract:

Caenorhabditis elegans was used as a model organism to dissect an x-chromosome-counting mechanism. Several genes control the activity of the sex-determination gene xol-1. A nuclear-hormone-receptor homologue SEX-1 has been identified as regulating the transcription of xol-1. It is critical to x-chromosome counting, acting directly on xol-1 and linking with its promoter in vivo, repressing xol-1 transcription in XX embryos.
