Short-circuiting the Z-scheme

Article Abstract:

E. Greenbaum and colleagues have reported that under certain circumstances fixation of carbon dioxide during photosynthesis can be carried out efficiently by PSII alone without the cooperation of PSI, the other photosystem. PSI and PSII bring about electron transfer from water to carbon dioxide. Greenbaum's research provides further insight into the mechanism of photosynthesis which reached a milestone with the introduction of the Z-scheme by R. Hill and D.S. Bendell through which they had shown the precise role of PSI and PSII.

Boreal forest plants take up organic nitrogen

Article Abstract:

Plant growth in the boreal forest is restricted by nitrogen availability, which is thought to be due due to slow mineralization of soil organic nitrogen. The uptake of organic nitrogen by the Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies trees, the Vaccinium myrtillus shrub and the Deschampsia flexuosa grass has been demonstrated for the first time. The results show that the plants can bypass nitrogen mineralization.

Large-scale forest girdling shows that current photosynthesis drives soil respiration

Article Abstract:

It has been demonstrated that the flux of photosynthates has a significant effect on soil respiratory losses. It is suggested that models of soil respiration should include measures of photosynthesis and of seasonal variations in photosynthate allocation to roots.
