The relative influences of nitrogen and phosphorus on oceanic primary production

Article Abstract:

A simple model could resolve the long-standing debate between oceanographers about whether nitrogen or phosphorus has overall control on oceanic primary production. A two-box global model of oceanic nitrogen and phosphorus cycles gave a representation of the competition between nitrogen-fixing and other phytoplankton. Homeostatic regulation of nitrate and phosphate results in external phosphate inputs have longer-term control of primary production in the global ocean.

Colour renewal from space

Article Abstract:

Oceanographers have viewed results from the Sea-Viewing Wide-Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS), a satellite-borne sensor. SeaWiFS follows up the Coastal Zone Colour Scanner (CZCS), but has more powerful and flexible observing capacity. Data can be relayed continuously and complete coverage of the globe is provided every three days. The obscuring effect of clouds is being tackled by combining dat from SeaWiFS with cloud-penetrating, active sensors.
