Social variation of lions in a male-depopulated area in Zambia

Article Abstract:

Adaptive behavior was examined in a group of lion pride in the Luanga Valley, Zambia. The pride was concentrated in an area where hunting pressure has decreased the male lion population. The prevailing social system was observed to increase the male lion's ranges beyond the pride range, accept more females within his pride and occasionally accept females from other prides. These behaviors are different from observed pride behavior of limiting the range and the breeding of pride males within the pride boundary.

Be social, live longer

Article Abstract:

A report by Keller and Genoud indicates that large increases can be made in lifespans. Tests were undertaken on social insects (ants and termites) for a link between longevity and reduced risk of death, based on comparative analysis. Increased lifespans were associated with the rise of eusociality, characterized by the division of labour into egg-laying specialist queens and attendant helper workers.
