Article Abstract:

A short, leucine-rich peptide motif has been identified that mediates the assembly of nuclear-receptor-activator complexes. The CREB-binding protein (CBP) interacts with an assortment of signal-dependent factors, including nuclear-hormone receptors, CREB, and STATS 1 and 2. CBP appears to be linked to the steroid-receptor co-activators, which also identify ligand-bound nuclear receptors. Transitional stimulation by CBP is triggered by several diverse cellular signals, including thyroid and steroid hormones.

Can the West contribute more to human frontiers?

Article Abstract:

Japan is asking the Western countries for a bigger contribution to the Human Frontier Science Program that supports international research on the brain and molecular biology. The program receives 80 percent of the yearly budget of $45 million from Japan however, other countries could not comply with the agreement. The scale of the technical challenges in high-energy physics means that international cooperation is needed for progress to happen.

Taking a shine to myosin

Article Abstract:

T. Funatsu and colleagues have developed a video-microscopy technique to detect single-molecule fluorescence in solution. Their technique involves conventional instrumentation and reduction of background scattering and fluorescence from 6,000 photons to 140 photons per second. Background counts were eliminated using an evanescent-wave technique to illuminate the surface on which flurophores attached to myosin molecules were located.
