Source of volcanic glass for ancient Andean tools

Article Abstract:

Peru's ancient hunters used obsidian to make spear points and knives. The location of the Quispisisa quarry that provided obsidian for central and northern Peru has long been known, but the source of the Titicaca-basin-type obsidian has remained elusive. Chemical analysis of such tools, used throughout Bolivia and Peru, suggests that most of the obsidian used in the south central Andes derived from the rediscovered Cotallalli quarry in Arequipa, Peru.
