South African academy in search of funds and a role

Article Abstract:

The new Academy of Science of South Africa in Pretoria plans to cover both humanities and natural sciences but its role has not been completely defined. The 96 founding members come from science, teaching, administration and public employment while areas of potential influence include curriculum reform and a national health plan. The Royal Society of South Africa, Science and Engineering Academy of South Africa and Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns all support the new Academy which does not plan to replace or consolidate the three existing academies.

A future for South Africa's nuclear agency?

Article Abstract:

The future of South Africa's three energy industries, SASOL, MOSSGAS and Atomic Energy Corporation (AEC) created by the National Party government depends on the country's new government which will take office in May 1994. The new government's policy on nuclear industry is not known, and AEC's continuance in the circumstances is doubtful.
