Spaceflight monkey's death 'raises new safety issues.'

Article Abstract:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has for some time been attracting controversy because of its use of monkeys on Bion space missions. The death of one of two monkeys used on the Bion 11 mission in Dec 1996 has prompted NASA to decide not to use rhesus monkeys on the Bion 12 spacecraft in 1998. This incident caused considerable embarrassment to NASA, but it was not the only factor behind the decision not to use monkeys on the next mission, according to Alice Hellerstein, of the American Physiological Society.

NASA moves to speed up grants process

Article Abstract:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has started top reform the process of grant administration in order to tackle problems highlighted by academics dependent on NASA for funding. These problems include late payment, too much paperwork, and lack of predictability about grants. Changes which have yet to be approved by top management are geared to reducing the time taken for funds to be received after an award has been won, to under a month in 2000. Electronic grants processing will form part of the reforms.
