Sticky spices

Article Abstract:

The spiciness of foods like garlic, horseradish and cinnamon is perceived through sensory neurons of the pain pathway, the lingering pungency of which, has resulted from chemical modification of the activated transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) that trigger these neurons. Studies exploring how one channel can be activated by so many and such varied stimuli are presented.

Finding the missing fundamental

Article Abstract:

Experts have found neurons that figure out what the pitch of a sound is even, when they are presented with physically different signals, providing hints to how to perceive pitch as a unified entity. They studied the auditory cortex in the marmoset monkey that showed that the marmoset neurons responded to frequencies in their respective fields.

Friends and grandmothers

Article Abstract:

A neuron in the human brain, popularly known as grandmother cell, that detects and resents every object is described. The results revealed that grandmother cells are the theoretical limit of sparseness, where the representation of an object is reduced to a single neuron.
