Structural basis of RNA folding and recognition in an AMP-RNA aptamer complex

Article Abstract:

The recognition and binding of the RNA consensus ATP-binding region to AMP involve base-mismatch pairing, hydrogen bonding, stacking interactions and formation of a hairpin fold. The AMP-RNA aptamer complex is L shaped with two orthogonal stems capped by a G.G mismatch pair. The structure of the first hairpin loop is similar to that of a stable RNA secondary-structure element. The binding of AMP induces a conformational change in the RNA ATP-binding site. The structure of the complex is determined from molecular dynamic computations and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy.

Tetrads through interdigitation

Article Abstract:

A new four-stranded motif of DNA structure was discovered using high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance and single-crystal x-ray techniques. Antiparallel interdigitation of cytosine-cytosine parallel-stranded duplexes, called the 'i-motif', are formed at acidic pH. The discovery of this i-tetrad structure of nucleic acids raises questions on the role of such formations in biology.

Zipping together a cell adhesion interface

Article Abstract:

A single crystal X-ray characterization of the amino-terminal domain of murine N for neural cadherin (NCDI) reveals the nature of cadherins. Cadherins are molecules involved in the adhesion and selective cell recognition during the embryonic morphogenesis. The adhesion and cell recognition is performed by a specific dimer interfaces in the NCDI domain.
