Structural biology and phylogenetic estimation

Article Abstract:

A phylogenetic parsimony analysis of the whole protein-coding portion of the mitochondrial genome of 19 taxa whose interrelationships are widely recognized failed to produce the anticipated phylogenetic tree. Furthermore, there was strong bootstrap support for the incorrect placements. This indicates that misleading signals will not always vanish as more data are obtained. Parsimony analysis of a subset of sites made up of first and second codon positions, modally coding for proline, methionine, asparagine, cysteine and glutamine, produced the expected tree with strong bootstrap support for most nodes.

Retailers squeeze electric appliance manufacturers

Article Abstract:

The development of UK's electrical appliance industry is analyzed to explain the emergence of the 'Buyer Power' of certain large retailers in the highly competitive consumer goods sector. The buying power of these retailers has resulted in losses for manufacturers in the industry. A major factor which gave rise to this 'Buyer Power' is the poor product development and manufacturing performance of electrical appliance firms. Prospects for the industry are also outlined.

Sorry, we're fresh out of bulletproof vests

Article Abstract:

Houston, TX, Miami, FL, Los Angeles, CA, and New York City police departments offer civilian-observation programs. Most police calls are based on man-with-gun or domestic disputes. Program participants must sign a waiver that frees the police from liability, and many departments require the wearing of a bulletproof vest.
