TRA-1 regulates the cellular distribution of the tra-2 mRNA in C. elegans

Article Abstract:

TRA-1 acts through the tra-2 3'UTR to control the subcellular localization of the tra-2 messenger RNA (mRNA). An investigation of how tra-1 promotes tra-2 activity used RNA in situ analysis to compare the subcellular distribution of tra-2 mRNA between wild-type and tra-1(null) animals. It appears that TRA-1 binding to the tra-2 3'UTR promotes transport of the tra-2 mRNA out of the nucleus. This process may affect sexual development in several ways.

An RNA-export mediator with an essential nuclear export signal

Article Abstract:

A new yeast protein, Gle1, and its interaction in RNA export was characterized through genetic screening. Gle1 contains a nuclear export signal (NES) and has a relative molecular mass of 62,000. It prevents the export of polyadenylated RNA from the nucleus and interacts with the cellular cofactor, Rip1, and the nucleoporin Nup100 at the nuclear pore complexes. It is hypothesized that the Rev protein for HIV-1 mimicks the function of Gle1.

The head inducer Cerberus is a multifunctional antagonist of Nodal, BMP and Wnt signals

Article Abstract:

The vertebrate head is believed to be induced by different signals from those organizing trunk-tail development. The cerberus gene encodes a protein expressed in anterior endoderm which is able to induce ectopic heads in the absence of truck structures. The cerberus protein acts as a multivalent growth-factor antagonist, binding to Nodel, BMP and Wnt proteins through independent sites.
