Taiwan left isolated in fight against SARS

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's government has been having difficulty obtaining the latest information and diagnostic tools in the fight against SARS (severe actue respiratory syndrome). The World Health Organization claims its hands are tied since Taiwan is not a member, and the Chinese government does not recognize its existence. 23 probable cases of SARS have been reported in Taiwan.

Flu in wild birds sparks fears of mutating virus

Article Abstract:

The death of more than 1,000 migratory birds in China from flu strains H5N1 has left experts struggling to square the outbreak with their knowledge of the virus. The experts suggest that the migrants are asymptomatic carriers of the virus causing the occasional outbreak among poultry population along their migration routes.

Vaccine sought as bird flu infects humans

Article Abstract:

The World Health Organization is scrambling to develop a vaccine for avian flu H5N1 ever since it jumped from birds to humans in Hong Kong. The strain does not appear to transfer easily to humans, and it appears to have originated in mainland China, also the home of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
