Talc at fault

Article Abstract:

The discovery of the ultrasoft mineral talc in rocks from deep inside the fault might help in explaining the aberrant behavior of California's San Andreas fault. The San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) project's main objective is to determine the nature of the deformed rocks and the physical and chemical conditions in and around the fault zone below the surface and to monitor seismicity, fluid pressure, stress and fault slip.

Fracture surface energy of the Punchbowl fault, San Andreas system

Article Abstract:

Structural observations of the Punchbowl fault, a large-displacement exhumed fault in the San Andreas Fault system is qualified. It shows that the energy required to create a fracture surface area in the fault is about 300 times greater than seismological estimate would predict for a single large earth quake.

Hybrid fracture and the transition from extension fracture to shear fracture

Article Abstract:

In rock deformation experiments, two types of brittle fractures are observed which is a fundamental mechanism of material failure. The results of triaxial extension experiments on Carrara marble that show a continuous transition from extension fracture to shear fracture is presented.
