Statistics of chronic disease control

Article Abstract:

Chronic vascular and neoplastic diseases are becoming increasingly important as causes of premature death among middle-aged people both in developed and developing countries. Tobacco, hepatitis B virus, blood pressure and blood cholesterol are the principal risk factors for chronic disease, with tobacco being the gravest threat. To counter the danger posed by chronic disease more clinical trials of potential treatments and additional epidemiological research are essential.

Targeted disruption of the mouse transforming growth factor-beta-1 gene results in multifocal inflammatory disease

Article Abstract:

Transforming growth factor-beta-1 (TGF-beta-1) regulates many physiological and developmental processes. When the gene for TGF-beta-1 is disrupted in mice, they start to waste away about 20 days after birth and finally succumb to multifocal inflammatory cell disease, organ failure and death. The mice deficient in this gene offer a model for studying human immune and inflammatory disorders, including graft versus host reactions, transplant rejection and autoimmune diseases.
