Technical note: utilization of sainfoin by grazing steers and a method for predicting daily gain from small-plot grazing data

Article Abstract:

The potential of sanfoin (Onobrychis viciaefolia) as forage for Angus x Hereford crossbred steers was investigated. Bud, flower and seed shatter stages of sanfoin were subjected to light (L), medium (M) and heavy (H) grazing pressure to determine the effect of plant growth stage and grazing pressures on animal production predicted by energy intake as a multiple of maintenance. Percent body weight of dry matter intake for L, M and H grazing pressures were 3.9, 2.8 and 1.7, respectively. Live weight gain predicted for L, M and H grazing were 0.86, 0. 67 and 0.03 kg/day, respectively. The findings have applications for evaluating treatments in small grazing plots.

Predicting the profitability of alfalfa silage and pasture feeding systems forHolstein steers

Article Abstract:

A comparative study was conducted on Holstein steers to evaluate their performance when subjected to an alfalfa silage feeding system and a pasture feeding system. Animals received a diet with a low, medium or high content of either alfalfa silage or orchardgrass/ryegrass. All animals were later fed with a high concentrate diet of the same. Results indicated that the profitability of the alternative feeding regulation systems was dependent on cost of feed, cost of time and feed requirement and was not determined by differences in physical development.
