The AM and FM of calcium signalling

Article Abstract:

It has been demonstrated by R.E. Dolmetsch and colleagues that antibody-producing cells (B lymphocytes) in the immune system respond to the amplitude modulation (AM) of the Ca2+ messenger, causing differential gene transcription. Ca2+ signalling potential can be increased through operation in either AM or frequency modulation (FM) modes. FM modes appear to control cellular processes' rates through oscillation. The way in which cells use AM and FM signalling modes is described in some detail.

Sequential signalling during Caenorhabditis elegans vulval induction

Article Abstract:

During the induction of the caenohabditis elegans vulval induction, anchor-cell signal transduction is not required for the expression of the secondary cell fate. Observation of genetic mosaic animals in which precursor cells (P5.p, P6.p, P7.p) were defective in the anchor cell signal transduction pathway showed that these cells adopted a secondary cell path. The data proving that this pattern of cell fates can be generated by sequential signals has been given in detail.
