The Santa Barbara Basin is a symbiosis oasis

Article Abstract:

The Santa Barbara Basis in California has a significant number and variety of prokaryotic-eukaryotic structural links. This establishes the region as a new model community for researching chemoautotrophic symbioses. It is likely that bacterial-eukaryotic symbiotic communities are more common in the modern ocean than is currently realized, as environments supporting chemoautotrophic bacterial mats are frequently found in modern oceans. Bacterial-eukaryotic symbiotic communities probably have a substantial effect on oceanographic processes such as nutrient cycling.

Molecular basis of symbiosis between Rhizobium and legumes

Article Abstract:

It is possible to show the presence of new symbiotic loci and signalling mechanisms through a study of the entire nucleotide sequence and gene complement of the plasmid from Rhizobium sp. NGR234. This gives the bacterium the ability to form a symbiotic relationship with leguminous plants. It can be seen that there is a high proportion of insertion and mosaic sequences, and it is possible that an Agrobacterium-like progenitor gathered symbiotic genes through transposition with other soil bacteria.

Evidence for stabilizing selection in a eukaryotic enhancer element

Article Abstract:

Compact cis-regulatory modules or enhancers mediate eukaryotic gene expression. The even-skipped strip 2 element controls expression of a second transverse stripe of even-skipped messenger RNA in Drosophila melanogaster embryos. A model for the evolution of eukaryotic regulatory sequences is presented.
