The Universe as a lattice

Article Abstract:

Researchers led by J. Einasto claim that the Universe is structured as a rectangular three-dimensional lattice. Careful scrutiny of the distribution of galaxy clusters reveals a pattern forming a three-dimensional lattice measuring (infinity)120 h-1 Mpc. Redshift surveys including the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Anglo-Australian Telescope's '2DF' survey will greatly improve the measurement of cosmic structures out to 500 Mpc.

Bursting out all over

Article Abstract:

Intense gamma-ray bursts (GRB) from cosmic sources are detected regularly. Two recent studies support the proposition that the majority of gamma-ray bursts emanate from explosions involving black holes or neuron stars in the far reaches of the Universe. It is hoped that, by establishing a relativistic-fireball model, GRB afterglows can be used to explore the early Universe's ambient gas properties.

Through a glass brightly

Article Abstract:

Irwin and colleagues have described an object with the largest apparent luminosity in the Universe, APM08279+5255, which appears to be 10 times more luminous than IRASF10214+4724, recorded in 1991. APM08279 is believed to be gravitationally lensed by a foreground galaxy, and its discovery is further evidence that luminous dusty galaxies and quasars exist in the distant Universe.
